This morning an article in “The New York Times” caught my attention. It suggested keeping a written journal of the gratitude we feel. Wishing others a “Happy Thanksgiving” once a year simply doesn’t invoke a heart-felt knowing-ness and expression of joy and happiness as well as keeping a “Gratitude Journal”.

Apparently “studies” have been done that conclude many people actually feel happier overall when they reflect upon, feel into, and write down their authentic feelings of gratitude. And their happiness improves their relationships, work performance, and overall health.

The article went on to say that wide-sweeping statements like “I’m grateful for a roof over my head” have less impact, if any, than specific things like “I’m grateful for having found a parking space” or “I’m grateful at THIS moment because . . . .” And apparently for many, weekly journal entries are more effective than daily entries.

I was reading the article at a local coffee shop. I set down the paper to go to the restroom. Wow, there indeed was a restroom! How different than places I’ve been in other countries, where at times there simply was NO restroom! And, there was no line! And, unlike a somewhat embarrassing time when I was first in Hong Kong, there was actually toilet paper provided! (Local customs differ, I found out – in an untimely circumstance, I might add!)

And so, as David Whyte once asked: “How do you go through the day without taking the sunlight coming through the kitchen window for granted?”
